I despise it when commentators calling a fight say, “Body shots make your legs weak…” fighters themselves often say the same thing.
This refuse of boxing lore has existed probably since boxing commentary. It’s gotta stop.
THEY DON’T!
Why not just tell the truth.
If anything body shots actually cause a “rigor mortis”-like stiffening of the legs (and body) so the legs actually get stronger attempting to keep you upright… before you double over in unrelenting pain. And you consciously realize it.
It’s like being eaten alive… unlike a headshot, where you could have open heart surgery and you wouldn’t feel it.
What really happens is a well-placed body shot either cripples the kidney so intensely, or takes the (solar plexus)oxygen out of your body. Pretty much causing your body’s organs to implode, collapse, and crumple into a ball.
Because the knees bend, we think the body shot weakens the legs, but it doesn’t. The legs attempt to keep you upright… The pain of the punch is so intense, the disturbance of the tissue, itself, causes a physical inward collapse.
A Return to the Fetal Position
Kind of like a submersible that went too deep. But in a submersible, the collapse happens at a speed so fast that you feel nothing. Now the body shot is altogether different: You feel everything — and INTENSELY.
The legs escape persecution.
