The System of Silk: No Real Growth in Boxing

The chart above provides information on HBO in 2017 and why there’s no growth in the sport of boxing. Hence, this is why HBO stopped carrying the fights.

I feel it’s GENERALLY because boxing and its’ practitioners, its experts and its fan base (generally/not specifically) remain willfully ignorant to the point and purpose of the sport. Many think the same thing that was thought in the 1800’s.

Is that something we can agree on?

There is no real growth in the sport… It stays viable only through its heritage and lore.

There is no fresh thought. It’s the same old regurgitated tripe. It’s like no-one has been hit by the proverbial apple of Sir Issac Newton, which helps one understand the gravity of a punch. And because of that, the levels of the general public’s expectation, in fighters, is low. Which, in turn, means literally anyone can become a professional boxer. Which means it ain’t too much longer before the sport has seen its last sunrise. I mean, when a YouTuber is doing bigger numbers than its fighters, sorry, but you have a real problem.

Yes… The bar is that low.

Few really understand the mechanics of boxing. Everyone would like to think they know boxing like the back of their hand, as boxing seems very straight forward: Just, close your fist, punch a man in the face often — and with effort.

Especially the jab. “Because it’s a magic wand — that if you use your jab, you’ll win.” Oh yeah, and “if you hit him in the body, you’ll kill his legs”.

I’m still waiting for someone to tell me how that one works. Does anybody got a degree in physiology? I don’t, but even a caveman would tell ya, “Ugh.”

It’s all heresay, like fears of witches in Connecticut and Massachusetts. It’s been said so often, now, people truly believe it.

But after that, boxing knowledge drops off to, “who lost the least fights,” and “styles make fights.” And, no, styles don’t make fights. ATTRIBUTES, MAKE FIGHTS!!!

I’m not sure many can look at two fighters without peeking at their record, and decide who the better fighter is.

No one values defense. And, in reality, the better the defense, the better the offense.

Wanna make boxing better… Wanna upgrade the talent? Give fighters a half point for defense FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. People have absolutely no idea how hard it is to PURPOSEFULLY make a person miss a punch when they are one foot in front of you.

That’s really important; fights would be more exciting and less fighters would suffer from dementia at the end of their careers.

INSCENTIVIZE DEFENSE

It’s a win/win. The fans and the fighters come out victorious.

The other problem is, Generally, trainers don’t train defense in fighters to turbo charge offense. If they teach active defense at all, they GENERALLY teach defense to not get hit. Which is kinda okay, but people have paid to see a FIGHT, which kinda takes precedence. But if officials gave points for defense, fighters and trainers and managers would value their fighters a lot more. And this is sorely needed. Heck, even journeymen would be better.

This one move alone would put boxing (FINALLY) on the map of GROWTH.

Football players are often thought of as better players today than 100 years ago.

Same with boxing: Fighters of today could GENERALLY be better than the fighters of yesteryear.

But, as of now, they are not.

Think outside the BOX(ing). You heard it here first. Do with it what you will.
