(A reader) thought Roy had no “fundamentals” but Roy was KO’d because his resiliency diminished with time. Plus, Roy is wound very tight. He’s an apex, reflex fighter. There’s no give so when he is hit, it’s a tuning fork effect. If Roy fought the way people think he should fight, with the “fundamentals” I guarantee you he wouldn’t have been as great as he was. He would’ve limited his ability and confidence. He’d become basic and predictable like everyone else.
The thing is, everyone has a different way to hunt, when father time comes for you, there’s nothing you can do.
Follow-Up Thoughts
Y’know, in regards to the FUNDAMENTALS dustup we find ourselves consistently embroiled in, mainly using Roy Jones Jr as the ultimate example, I was going to speak with Alton Merkerson Sr and ask his opinion…Point in fact… THIS IS BOXING GOSPEL.
“Self discipline and to stick to what works for you in the ring. No two boxers are the same but!! Some times trainers try and instill in their boxers what they tried to do and fail. Everyone knows their strength and weaknesses and should capitalize on their strong points. Always remember that you are the one that is responsible for your own actions and not your trainer. Not everyone can be a Roy Jones Jr or Mike Tyson, that was their style and one has to develop their own style to become a great boxer. You take bits and pieces from everyone to create your own style. Let what ever decisions you make be your own!!!
Emphasis on “Let the decisions you make be your own.”
