The articulation of the fist is the single most important aspect to punching accurately, efficiently and powerfully. Whether the punch is straight, an uppercut or hook, etc, the intent of every punch MUST be to make impact with the middle finger knuckle first. Therefore, articulation of the fist is, by far, more important than stance (for instance) and should be the first thing your coach focuses on if you are to have greater success in boxing. Your hands are an extension of your brain.
When you articulate the fist, you are punching with a deeper purpose than just reflex. So your punch, when delivered, is more accurate and carries more explosiveness.
