Jaron “Boots” Ennis, unified World Boxing Association and World Boxing Organization Junior Middleweight Champion
SAN FRANCISCO, CA — This past Saturday night’s main event on DAZN wasn’t a showdown between Jaron “Boots” Ennis & Xander Zayas. No, it was more like a beatdown! Philadelphia’s Ennis started “punching holes” in the 23-year old Puerto Rican seconds into the fight, decking Zayas in the first, fifth, and seventh rounds. With the exception of winning round three and Xander semi-staggering Ennis a couple of times, Zayas was “catching hard shots” from that first bell until the 7th round, ending when Xander’s corner had seen enough. Put the fight into an historic perspective? Another Puerto Rican fighter “bites the dust!”
COMMODORE’S LEAD SINGER HAD “BEST LINE “ ON “BOOTS”
“I like Boots Ennis a lot more today, than I did yesterday,“ was the way Brent Carter of The Commodores put it, and I couldn’t agree more. So why wasn’t Pedro on the Boots bandwagon prior? Because the best fighter he ever faced was a guy named “Karen“ Chukhadzhian, who took Jaron the distance twice. And while the Ukranian doesn’t fight like a girl, he isn’t the second coming of anything, having gotten dropped TWICE in losing a May 2026 scrap with Ireland’s Paddy Donavan (14-2, 11 KOs). So it took Ennis lighting Xander up like a “Bronx blunt“ to get me on board.
ENNIS WANTS “OFTEN STAGNANT” VERGIL ORTIZ
“Vergil or Virgil” Ortiz
There was Mexican fighter a few years back named Jhonny Gonzalez (69-12-1, 56 KOs), and when I quizzed his corner on the spelling of Jhonny being right, they said the spelling error was made by a Mexican hospital. Why isn’t it Virgil Ortiz instead of Vergil Ortiz? That’s the only real question as the “boat has already sailed” for the now 30-year-old (24-0, 22 KOs) fighter who has “No Claim“ to any boxing fame. None!
VERGIL’S “DELAYED” CAREER IS ESSENTIALY OVER!
Long layoffs, promotional and medical problems, and although nobody says it but besides me, having parents who couldn’t spell Virgil! In closing, the Texican who was the “most recent” Mexican-American attempt to replicate Oscar De La Hoya, is a friggin’ head case who in all likelihood has already reached his peak!
PUERTO RICAN’S “STRIKE OUT” UNO MAS!
Pedro can see Xander going down the same path as Juan Manuel “Juan Ma” Lopez. Meaning I expect Xayas to stick around and possibly win a few fights, but this Rican is the first to admit he doesn’t have the punch, chin, or boxing ability to beat an upper echelon pug or champion at 160 lbs. All Xander has to look forward to in his boxing future is “Hurt.”
ODDS WERE “NOT LONG” SEEING THE DOMINATION
Las Vegas tabbed Ennis a 6-1 favorite over Xander Zayas. He is a 2 ¼ to 1 fav over Ortiz.
