‘Eye Carajo’: Michael Olajide Keys on the Role of Eyes in Boxing

For the longest time when I fought, I used to look at my opponent’s face. Why? That’s what I was told… And that is also what I wasn’t told but left to think, so I naturally deferred to that. It felt like the right thing to do.

Almost like the eyes are mystical crystal balls that will reveal some truth.

They aren’t. They don’t.

The eyes are tools. They are in-fact the MOST important tools in your tool box.

In all of boxing.

They see the openings, and they see the incoming.

Only Daredevil can fight blind.

I know for a fact my fight life was so much better when my vision was 100 percent.

“Look at his eyes?” You’re in a fight, not on a date. The eyes reveal NOTHING. Always know where your opponents fists lol are!

You need to track the fists ,and always know where they are, because those are the only two things that are going to hit you.

I remember real early in my pro career. My sparring partner, Doug Holman, was built real strong. He wasn’t a world-beater, but a solid fighter, and when the bell rang, his eyes never left my fists until the bell ended the round. He was one of the hardest people to hit I had ever encountered — and I’ve sparred what seems a million guys a million times.
